Gay Marriage A Go
Just before 8pm, after more than an hour of intense debate, the Assembly passed AB 849, a bill legalizing gay marriage, putting Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in the hot seat as he now must decide whether to veto or to sign the legislation. |

It's not surprising that Tom Umberg voted for this bill after the Speaker directly "called out" those who break their own wedding vows as hypocrites if they claim to support the sanctity of marriage.
It only goes to show that once compromised, always compromised.
I sincerely hope that this eliminates any opportunity for Mr. Umberg to move to the Senate or other higher office.
Ken Maddox was in Sacramento on Tuesday. Some are talking about a Maddox challenge to Umberg in that State Senate race.
A socially conservative, labor friendly Republican like Maddox could spell trouble for the Democrats in the 34th.
Interesting side note on that end...Battin's legislative director is Maddox's former Chief of Staff. If Battin takes out Ackerman for Senate leader, don't be surprised if he rolls out the red carpet for a Maddox candidacy
