Smirnoff Ice--For a Price
It looks like the price of a drink--or at least a malted beverage--is about to jump across California. If Attorney General Bill Lockyer has his way a six-pack of Smirnoff Ice, and other popular malted beverages, will spike up in price by $1.86 due to new taxes. The drink would now be taxed at the rate of hard liquor, rather than at the beer rate. College girls who don't like beer but can't handle hard liquor are aghast. The new definition of malted beverages as "hard liquor" will also disqualify more than 30,000 stores from selling the drink--unless they get a new liquor license. The new hybrid beverages were first introduced in 1999 but have swelled to 2.5 percent of the nation's beer market. |
