    California Young Democrats

The California Young Democrats gathered in Lake Tahoe over the weekend and endorsed State Treasurer Phil Angelides for the next governor.

    Shane,

You should ask Crystal Strait about that endorsement. She strong-armed local CYD leaders into backing Angelides, all the while claiming neutrality. We should have known, since she works for Lloyd Levine, who has endorsed Phil Angelides. Several local CYD presidents wanted a no endorsement vote since it's so early in the race. But we were steamrollered over by Crystal, clearly a Phil puppet. It's no wonder so many CYD members have so little faith in her as president.

Wait, Lloyd Levine is so powerful that he can get Crystal to push 77% of the entire California Young Democrat leadership to endrose Phil? Wow. Maybe Cedillo should get Lloyd on the team to get the driver's license bill signed if his office is so powerful...

No Anonymous, I'm not saying that Llyod Levine is so powerful that he made that vote possible.

What I do know is that the woman strong-armed the local CYD leaders into backing Phil Angelides while publicly proclaiming her absolute neutrality on the issue.

And did you see the release? Talk about nasty. No wonder they backed Angelides. Nasty backs Nasty!

    Anon,
You sound like some bitter ex-quasi-nobody who wishes someone would elect them to YD leadership. The woman has about as much power as Alex De Campo had, which is none. He couldn't even get California YD's to vote for him and she can't make anyone vote for Phil.

    Anonymous,

"A bitter ex quasi nobody"? That's funny! Thanks for putting a smile on my face. But yeah you're half right, I am embittered. So what of it?

At any rate, it's true that she's not well regarded and I intend to do everything I can to ensure she is not re-elected next time around.

    Best,

    Oh puh-lease.

The difference between "strong-arming" and "campaigning" is a matter of perspective isn't it? From the winners circle, victory is attributable to deft campaigning and strategy. From the losers bench, defeat is attributable to strong-arming and misleading the voters.

Several CYD presidents preferred "no endorsement," this is true - I was one of them. The decision came down to a vote of the membership, however, and my arguments were less persuasive than those of the Angelides backers.

    Life goes on.

What I wonder about, however, is the assertion by a nameless commenter (oh, how anonymity strengthens one's position, eh?) that "so many members have so little faith in her as president."

What I don't wonder about is that there are those out there who having suffered the injustice of political defeat have decided to exact personal revenge on a woman whose primary sin has been zealous promotion of an organization which she fought tooth-and-nail to lead - in the face of opposition from those who had formerly agreed to back her candidacy. With friends like that, who needs opponents?

It doesn't surprise me that some who seldom show their face in the organization - and even less frequently lift a finger - are already actively out recruiting someone - ANYONE - to run against Crystal. It's all part of their pattern of behavior. While the commenter accuses Crystal of claiming neutrality while campaigning for the candidate she believes is best for the party (which are non-exclusive positions since in her position as President she would ensure fair votes and in her position as a California Democrat had a duty to advocate the best person for our future), I can't help but recall past leaders claiming to support her while actively recruiting opposition to run against her.

I should know - I was one such would-be recruit.

And I considered running, decided against it, and ended up supporting her opponent. But you know what? I have been pleased by her performance and pleased by the direction in which CYD is heading.

I am also displeased that a few, cancerous elements continue to try to ruin the party for everyone else because of personal political defeat or a wrong-headed sense of superior political knowledge or instincts. Others who have had their chance to lead, or who might have had a chance to lead, prefer to sacrifice their shot at holding that sacred trust to pick petty fights and thwart true progress.

In politics, things don't always go your way. The mark of true leadership is to rise above the hurt and put the greater good ahead of your ego.

As far as the statement made about Alex, he didn't get as much support as he should of because of Crystal. As someone who was there, I saw how she back-handedly chose delegates she knew had a beef against Alex and out them in at the last minute. Everything she does is sneaky like that! I know I'm a "nobody", but I don't like where CYD is going and I'll support anyone who will change it. How can we fight the repubs if we just waste time fighting each other?

By the way, who is this "cd" that has such a hard on for Crystal? Probably her husband or mom or something . . .
