I Say Tomato, You Say Veto
Schwarzenegger bill count: The Governor has received 961 bills in the 2005 legislative session. He has taken action on 751 bills, signing 624 and vetoing 127. One priceless veto of AB 649 ( Parra), on a bill about tomatoes: While I support strengthening handling and processing standards for fresh fruit and vegetable products, this bill overreaches by instilling the California Tomato Commission or joint powers authority with broad powers such as establishing quality standards, inspections, and surveillance that may be inappropriate for this type of structure. Something about "quality standards" being inappropriate is worrisome. The Assembly floor analysis says, "The Commission does not currently have the authority to inspect tomatoes for health and safety compliance standards." Neither health nor safety? |

Um, we have this national organization called the "Food and Drug Administration" that does that. Why create a state bureaucracy to simply duplicate what the Fed's already do?
