Next Assembly GOP Leader
Speculation continues to swirl about who will be the next Republican leader in the Assembly if Rep. Bill Thomas retires from Congress and current Assembly Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy jumps in to replace him. As the LA Times reports, Bill Thomas has a press conference scheduled for Monday to announce his plans. There is apparently a push from Washington to keep Thomas in Congress, says the article. Back in California, there is no love lost between the FlashReport's Jon Fleischman and Thomas. At the top of his page today, Fleischman has the headline: "MERCURIAL GOP CONGRESSMAN FROM BAKERSFIELD, BEST KNOWN FOR BRINGING HOME "PORK" FOR HIS DISTRICT, AND TEMPER TANTRUMS, MAY RIDE INTO THE SUNSET". And in Sacramento, the battle to replace McCarthy continues. The top declared candidates are Sharon Runner, George Plescia, Rick Keene, and Mimi Walters. The GOP rumor mill site, Hack n Flak has been all over this story, with the latest poster announcing all the good things about Plescia, whom many believe to be the current frontrunner. Of course, "promised" votes don't mean anything for sure until they become actual votes. And all of this still depends on Thomas' retirement. |
