Schwarzenegger has vetoed Sen. Gil Cedillo's SB 60, which would provide drivers licenses to illegal immigrants. Here's the veto message: This bill is premature and could undermine national security efforts to identify individuals who pose enormous risk to the safety of Californians. I have repeatedly stated that the ability to verify documents used to establish an identity must include a way to determine whether an individual is who he or she purports to be and must include a criminal background check In addition, enacting this bill will result in millions of dollars being spent on a process that ultimately could conflict with federal regulations. Once the federal rule making is finalized, it would be appropriate to engage in discussions relating to implementation of the Act, including whether or not a driving only certificate is appropriate in California. Also, sorority will now have to spend more money on their Alco-pop drinks, as Schwarzenegger also vetoed AB 417. This bill would codify current law and practice to treat flavored malt beverages as a malt beverage product consistent with federal standards of identity, which 49 of the 50 states follow. I am taking this action to allow a full discussion of the issues surrounding flavored malt beverages, not to suggest that the State’s regulatory administration of flavored malt beverages is flawed. It was amended late in the session and only had one full hearing with short notice. I encourage all interested parties, particularly health professionals, law enforcement and the producers of flavored malt beverages, to use this opportunity for public debate and serious consideration of the policy issues surrounding this beverage. |
