CTA endorses McPherson
In a surprising move, the powerful California Teachers Association has endorsed Republican Bruce McPherson in his run for reelection as secretary of state. From the release: "Bruce McPherson will ensure the integrity of the voting process and the rights of all voters in California," said Barbara E. Kerr, president of the California Teachers Association. "Throughout his career Secretary McPherson has been a strong supporter of public education, schools and students." "I am very proud and honored to have CTA's endorsement and the support of rank-and-file teachers," said McPherson. "In my 11 years in the California Legislature I always worked closely with the CTA to provide California's children the best education possible. I'm glad to have their vote of confidence when it comes to protecting the rights of voters in California." That is the only statewide office I can think of that the CTA, which spent millions opposing Schwarzenegger's agenda last year, endorsed a GOP candidate this year. Not only that, but McPherson was appointed by Schwarzenegger to replace the resigned Kevin Shelley. Sitting Democratic Sens. Debra Bowen and Deborah Ortiz are running in the Democratic primary to face off against McPherson and would have been more expected recipients of the CTA endorsement. |

Except that McPherson was one of those Republicans that always supported the Union against school reform movements.
Interesting that Debra Bowen supports Proposition 89, the election reform initiative that CTA opposes.
