Gov. to Pay for Other Special Elections
Gov. Schwarzenegger signed AB 783, which requires the state to reimburse local governments for the costs of special elections for U.S. Senate and House and State Senate and Assembly seats from January 1, 2005 through January 1, 2006. This year , the governor has announced three such special elections, according to Jones' office: the special election to replace the deceased Congressman Robert Matsui (Sacramento County) and Assemblyman Mike Gordon (Los Angeles County) and the special election created by the appointment of Representative Christopher Cox to the Securities and Exchange Commission (Orange County). According to Jones' office, "It is estimated that the special election cost Sacramento $1.1 million dollars, Los Angeles $7 hundred thousand dollars and will potentially cost Orange County $7 hundred thousand dollars." The special election for Nov. 8, however, is not covered by the bill. |
